It was unusually warm in Oregon for a Sunday in January, nearly 70 degrees. The sun was out, which was also unusual. Two weeks earlier we’d had an ice storm and more or less were snowed in. All I wanted to do was go for a bike ride. I wanted to get out of the house, just for an hour or so.
And so naturally, the moment I went upstairs to change, my teenage daughter approached me, and said “can you help me with my papers?”
