The other day we had friends over for dinner. We were chatting about the kids, and one of our guests asked my 14yo Norah what her favorite class was, and she said “art.” And naturally, they asked to see some of her work, and listen. I can’t count how many times something like this has happened in my house.
We have a guest, and they ask some questions of my kids, and the kid answers, and the guest asks to see them dance, or to see their pictures, or hear them sing, and they grudgingly accept. And honestly, it’s always a little uncomfortable because it’s clear my child feels obliged to do the thing, but they are not enjoying it.
